7 Security Questions To Ask Your Day Care Provider

Moving to a new community or changing day care providers isn’t easy for any family. It takes meticulous research to make sure that you’re making the right choice. You’ve spent hours doing your homework, evaluating pricing, location, programming, and child-staff ratios. Yet, as you unbuckle your child from the car seat, you wonder if you’ve covered all the important details to make sure your little one is safe.

Whether shopping for a new day care or reviewing your current situation, make sure that the day care is looking after your child’s safety and security as the #1 priority.

7 SAFETY & SECURITY QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR DAY CARE PROVIDER

To make a well-informed decision, we at Brothers Fire and Security encourage all parents and guardians to include the following questions when screening day cares for your precious child.

Is there a well-stocked first aid kit on site and is it accessible? And by well-stocked, we mean more than assorted Band-Aids and gauze. There should be eye wash, burn dressing, pain-relieving gel, forehead thermometers, antiseptic spray, antimicrobial hand wipes, instant ice packs, stop bleeding powders, and more. Don’t hesitate to ask to see the first aid kit.

  1. Are the premises and the playground monitored for 24-7 security, who provides the monitoring, and are they reputable? You want your child safe and accounted for both outside and inside.
  2. Do all the staff know how to use fire extinguishers, reset monitoring equipment, and contact 911? Dialing 911 is easy, but answering dispatchers’ questions takes training.
  3. What ongoing training does the staff receive to handle fires, intruders, weather and other emergencies? It’s a good idea to ask when the last training was and who conducted it.
  4. Are the kitchen hoods inspected for safety and up to code? You want clean air and a healthy environment for your child.
  5. Are all the required safety and security inspections and services coordinated annually for the fire, security and communication systems? When were the last inspections done, and if issues were found, have they been resolved?
  6. Does the day care have an electronic sign-in and sign-out system in place to protect the children from unauthorized persons? This ensures that the child leaves the day care only with their parent or the parents’ authorized representative. It also eliminates the chaos of drop-off and pick-up.

By asking and getting proven answers to these questions, you can rest easy that your day care provider is committed to a safe and nurturing environment. At the end of each day, you want your child to greet you bursting with details of playmates and activities, and eager to return the next day in safety and security. Safety and security brings peace of mind for the whole family.

ANNUAL SERVICE AND INSPECTIONS
