Why Old Fire And Security Systems Make Your Buildings—and Business—vulnerable

Cell phones and computers update automatically. Modems are replaced with the latest models. Cable companies keep boosting internet speeds. To keep up with the rapid-fire technology advances in almost every facet of our lives and businesses, updates and new systems are not just common, they are essential.

The fire and security industry is no different, and advances in technology are driving improvements. Yet updating obsolete systems is not at the top of most companies’ To Do List and they can be overlooked, which makes your buildings vulnerable. But technology updates are vital to ensure your systems are ready to protect buildings and their occupants in emergencies.

From an insurance standpoint, fire and security systems that are old and not functioning correctly can put your insurance at risk from spot checks by insurance companies. Even worse, equipment that doesn’t operate correctly in an emergency can cancel or invalidate your insurance and you could be held liable.

WHEN YOUR FIRE ALARM AND SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS ARE OUTDATED

Like phones and computers, fire and security systems become obsolete a lot faster these days. Building codes change every 15 years on average, instead of 30 years like in the past. Building materials from 30-40 years ago are very different today. Many interior furnishings are made from materials that burn at a faster rate, meaning less time to manage in an emergency.

Old alarm and detection systems are not equipped to respond to quick and intense fires. Older analog systems are more susceptible to random malfunction, and older fire suppression and sprinkler systems become increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain. Plus, the impact that years of heat, humidity and cold have on wire and circuit boards makes them susceptible to failure.

ADVANTAGES OF UPDATING SECURITY SYSTEMS

In addition to the all-important safety and insurance considerations, there are other incentives to update security systems that you might have overlooked.

  • Cameras and surveillance equipment is getting cheaper and more effective with new technology.
  • If you don’t upgrade your systems, you lose the cost advantages that new systems can provide.
  • Equipment has moved from the old analog systems to the more effective IP (internet protocol) systems. For example, analog cameras can be converted to IP using very cost effective tools.
  • Older systems don’t “speak” the same language as the new systems, which can cause malfunction.
  • Cloud-based technology is increasing and more data is being stored safety off-site.

As you can see, keeping up with advancing technology is smart business, and now is the time to put it on your To Do List. If your systems are older than 10 years, schedule a free assessment with Brothers Fire & Security. If they’re older than 20 years, look at replacement systems. Older than 30 yearsr? Call us ASAP!
